Penelope Trunk on Writing Lists

Penelope Trunk on Writing Lists (Im packing to go to Las Vegas for two days and then Chicago for almost three days so I asked some friends to fill in for me while Im gone (can you tell? Scott Allen was yesterday) todays post is by Penelope Trunk, author, blogger, columnist and a really, really cool person Thanks a ton Penelope!) I am a list writer. I do it by hand. Every day. Sometimes three or four times a day, if I’m feeling really overwhelmed. Lists are a great way to force yourself to prioritize your life. When you read lists of why people fail, it’s clear that writing a list of goals every day will make your more successful at reaching them. But a lot of days, I think the motivator for me is not being a successful person. I just like the act of writing the list. I do it every morning, before I start work. And it’s calming, like a meditation. It also helps me to see my day — and when I write big goals, my life. There is a discipline that comes with rewriting every morning. You know those things that you keep on your list forever but never get to? You face reality much sooner if you rewrite by hand. The repetition of rewriting something that will never happen starts to get to you. You leave it off. I am not alone in the idea of writing by hand to gain focus. Dave Wirtschafter, president of William Morris Agency said in an interview in Fortune magazine: â€Å"I believe in writing down anything important by hand. I don’t now whether it’s staring at the piece of paper or the physical exercise of moving the pen. Whatever it is, the information seems to really stay in my head and make me more focused.† If you don’t do this, I recommend that you give it a try. Get rid of your electronic list for a week and see what happens. Henriette Klauser says that if you write down what you want the commitment you give to the writing of the goal will actually help you commit to making the goal come true. I think there’s some truth to that. And maybe you should check out her book, Write It Down, Make it Happen. But maybe what you should do is just buy some good paper and good pens. I like to use notebooks of graph paper. I think the boxes make me feel more organized than just horizontal lines. And I use pens that ooze ink. You can’t underestimate the importance of feeling the pen sail on the paper. Don’t tell me you’re too busy. The mere act of devoting time each day to your list is an acknowledgment of the importance of your prioritizing, goal-setting, and focus in your life. Go check out Penelopes blog, it is one of my favorites and she has thousands of fans (because her stuff is worth reading if you dont follow her you should). How to Ace Your Video Interview

How to Ace Your Video Interview So youve been invited for an interview for a job you really want, brilliant! The twist is, its a video interview  . Does the very idea of  this fill you with dread, or do you embrace the opportunity to exhibit your skills from the comfort of your own home?  Hey, you could even keep your PJs on under the table if you so wish! Video interviews are becoming more and more common in the recruitment industry with the release of new business  technology making it such an easy and convenient method of communicating with candidates. It allows recruiters to gain a better understanding of a candidate than a phone call and first impressions and the way that someone presents  them self are some of the most important factors in the recruitment process. But can a recruiter really get an accurate impression of  a candidate via a video link? A recent survey carried out by Sonru, ‘The Candidate Experience of Video Interviewing’, found a predominantly positive response from respondents, with 72% of candidates feeling happy about the idea of taking part in a video interview and 66% were impressed having experienced one.  The survey identified a number of other benefits of video interviewing from the candidate point of view, such as that 38% found it convenient that they  could choose a time that suited their schedule and 20% thought that being able to conduct the interview from home saved the stress and expense of travel. Although there are  disadvantages of not meeting a candidate face-t0-face, in the way that their general demeanour may not come across as clearly; it could actually offer a more realistic impression of the person, as they are typically more relaxed in their own environment. If youve got a video interview coming up and are unsure about how to approach it, here are a few pointers for achieving your best and making the technology work for you. Dress professionally: Make sure that you look smart and wear the same sort of thing  that you would for an in-person interview. I know I joked before about wearing pyjamas under the table, however its probably best to avoid this,  in case you have to stand up and end up revealing your interesting outfit choice. It has also been suggested that block colours work best on camera, as they will stand out more amongst your surroundings. Find a good camera angle: The best position  to place your camera is  the same height as the top of your head. Pointing the camera down at you will give the most flattering angle and by  encouraging you to tilt your head slightly upwards, it will  also help you to sit up straight. Be sure to look at the camera and  not the screen, in order to give the impression of  making eye contact with the interviewer, as this is an important factor that would be expected in a face-t0-face interview. Maintain good posture: Its likely that you will be doing the interview somewhere that you are comfortable, but dont forget that it is a formal interaction and good posture is important for making a positive  impression. Avoid slouching or  fidgeting and do your best to maintain the same composure that you would if you were in an office. Its also best to avoid too much movement, as gesticulating too much  may impair the camera focus  or become distracting. Be confident in front of the camera: This may be easier said than done, as not everyone is naturally comfortable speaking into a camera. Just try to relax as much as possible and practice is fundamental to building confidence for your video interview. Find a neutral  backdrop: Its probably needless  to say that its not a great idea to exhibit a messy house to your interviewer, however, even something like a bookshelf or ornaments may be slightly distracting from the message you are trying to portray in your interview. If possible, set your camera up in front of a blank wall and sit close to the camera so that it is just your head and shoulders in shot, to ensure that you are the central focus of the shot. If not, be sure that the room is tidy and gives a good professional representation of you. Use a good quality microphone: Its important that your interviewer is able to hear you properly, so invest in a good quality microphone before the interview for clear communication. The microphone will probably pick up other noises in the room in addition to your voice, so make sure youre in a quiet environment and avoid shuffling papers or moving things around.  Id also recommend doing  a test run of all the video equipment before your interview, to avoid any unexpected tech problems on the day. Be prepared Like you would for any job interview, make sure that you have a good knowledge of the company and role that you are interviewing for. Be prepared for the usual questions you may be asked and be equipped with questions to ask your interviewer too.  Make sure that you send any materials such as your CV, etc to your interviewer in advance, to save unnecessary time wasting on the occasion. Hold a mock interview Recruit a friend or family member to conduct a mock video interview with you ahead of the real thing. It will give you the chance to become comfortable addressing the camera and will allow you to  trial run the lighting, camera position, etc.

Egalitarian Guidance in the Business Community

Egalitarian Guidance in the Business Community It comes as no surprise that the business world remains a male-dominated arena with a low number of female top-ranking executives, directors, board members, and officers. Regulations in Western countries prohibit payment discrimination based on gender, yet the provisions have not fostered a climate of true egalitarianism when it comes to executive leadership. It’s a top-heavy pyramid, and men outweigh women in senior management by a long margin. There have been dramatic strides in recent decades, with the number of women occupying management and leadership roles increasing dramatically. According to Catalyst, female management numbers account for an estimated 24% of senior roles globally (2018 figures), down from 25% a year earlier. While the percentage decline is somewhat alarming, given that trends should be moving in the opposite direction, there are many positives to take out of current business practices. Women In Senior Management Women now occupy senior management positions in 3 of   4 businesses (2018) compared to just 1 senior female executive in 3.3 of 5 businesses (2017). Clearly, there has been an uptick in the number of women being considered and appointed to senior leadership and management positions in global business activity. There are notable absences of women in specific industries, including legal, corporate services, finance, IT, energy mining, software, and manufacturing. The mistaken perception that men are better suited to business activity preponderates, yet it too is slowly changing. Between 2016 and 2017, Australia reported that some 38.4% of management positions were occupied by females. The highest concentration of female management was non-senior management at 41.9%, followed by 34.9% of senior management, and 30.4% of general managers and executives. In Third World countries like India, women held just 20% of senior roles in 2018 and just 7% of managing director or chief executive officer roles in 2017. Much the same is true in Japan. In Europe and Canada, women occupy a greater percentage of senior management and other management positions, although their numbers remain low and do not reflect a truly egalitarian spread of gender-based leadership and management roles. Closing the Gap by Fostering Performance-based Promotions Gender equality in business requires more than mere lip service on the part of visionary leadership. One of the strongest proponents of gender equality for top-level leaders is Sarah Alter, the president and chief executive officer of the Network of Executive Women. The way to achieve a gender-neutral workplace is by fostering a business culture that embraces gender equality. This means that conscious inclusion of women must be prioritised over other elements, by priming employees to be the most skilled, capable, and competent assets to an organisation. Gender-neutral policies must be embraced by employees at all levels. Given that women typically shoulder the burden of family and child rearing, workplaces must allow for greater flexibility vis-a-vis personal responsibilities and managed work time. These are all elements that can contribute towards a gender-neutral system. Transparency, equitably, training, and talent scouting must focus on women to achieve preset objectives, while not discriminating against anyone who is best qualified for the job. Leading business gurus like Russell Ruffino echoes these sentiments. Ruffino is the CEO of Clients on Demand, and rather than focusing on promoting the old boys club, he focuses his efforts on training entrepreneurs â€" men and women to have the requisite skills for business success. His focus is not training the old guard how to entrench and embrace old systems; he offers disruptive business advice which focuses on a select group of clients at a higher rate of pay. By rejecting conventional marketing models which focus on the highest number of prospects through volume-based advertising, Clients on Demand ruffles feathers with the high-paying clients. A growing number of fans on his social media channels â€" YouTube, Facebook, Twitter et cetera is testament to the all-inclusive appeal of his teachings. Why Open-Minded, Progressive Business Mentors Matter The business world no longer operates in one dimension. We are now part of a much larger Internet of things where digital communication, social advocacy, and gender-neutral policies are sacrosanct. Millennials are the new generation which espouses these cultural norms and social systems. It is disingenuous to advocate anything less in the global business milieu, given the dramatic strides that have been taken in recent years to put men, women, and minorities on an equal footing with one another. Progressive business leadership is generating the type of results that have eluded many entrenched institutions for decades. By encouraging openness, transparency, and communication, people like Russ Ruffino and Sarah Alter are upending convention and brokering a new order.

Careers for the Compassionate - CareerAlley

Careers for the Compassionate - CareerAlley We may receive compensation when you click on links to products from our partners. A career choice is something that sticks with us for life. You spend a few years in college studying it, then you might study at university, then that might lead to a job. Thats already over ten years of your life spend studying for a job that you want to do, but what if you change your mind halfway through or realise that your career choice wasnt something that you actually liked. For instance, lets assume that you spent years studying computer science because you were told it would offer a lot of flexibility in job choice. So you graduate, you get a job, youre paid well, but you simply just hate your job. This situation isnt exactly uncommon and youd be surprised to hear that a lot of people actually switch away from these types of jobs after rediscovering themselves. Credit: Pexels Find what you love, not what you do best Its easy to tell yourself to continue slaving away at a job because youre great at what you do. Perhaps youre fantastic at maths and such, you have a job related to physics. Maybe youre an amazing writer, but the idea of sitting at a desk and pumping out blog posts or fictional work day after day could sound boring to you. There are many weird and wonderful careers out there, but the key here isnt to find something different or something that pays well. Instead, you need to find something that you enjoy and put your salary as a secondary condition. You cant repeat something that you hate and you cant force yourself to like a subject or task that you arent interested in. The best way to find something you really enjoy is to look back at your past. Think about what made you happy. For instance, it mightve been playing games, perhaps you loved to travel, maybe you loved animals, or you couldve loved to build things with Lego. Whatever it is, write these down and look for career choices that are tied to the activities that made you happy when you were young. Compassionate careers for people who want to make a difference However, one of the most enjoyable career choices is to do something compassionate. This is because compassionate careers usually involve helping others and giving assistance to those in need. By making a difference in the world, it empowers you with a sense of purpose that goes beyond being a single cog in a gigantic machine. When you work in the office, you rarely get to speak to or meet the people that your products and services are being used by. However, in a compassionate career such as being a veterinarian, you actually get to meet your patients as well as their owners, and their thanks and smiles are usually worth way more than a raise. So lets take a look at a number of different careers that require compassion. Credit: Pexels Childcare Whether you want to become someone that looks after children because their parents are busy or someone who works with children that have special needs and disabilities, youre bound to find a calling that suits you. Childcare is satisfying because you work knowing that youre not only helping children in their current state, but youre also influencing their future by providing them with much-needed attention. Youll get to teach children various things about life or about their school work, youll get to interact with them and answer their questions, and youll have a great sense of purpose. Nursing Looking after patients in a hospital or private medical practice is another compassionate role. The duties that a nurse takes care of are varied and depend on the doctors they work with. However, no matter what your specific job is, you can be sure that youll be working with patients that need care and youll be making a difference in the lives of every one of them. Its important that you study an RN-BSN program to learn all about nursing and the nuances that come with it. Of course, youll also need some knowledge in medicine and biology, but most courses cover these points. Flight Attendant Not only is a flight attendant a fantastic job for those who love to travel, its also a job that requires a lot of compassion. Youll be taking care of people on planes. Youll calm their fears, give them support to make them comfortable, serve them food and drinks, and also play a huge role in managing a specialised aircraft. Being a flight attendant takes a lot of training and its not a job for people who love their weekends to be free. Since youll be travelling all over the world, its hard to keep in touch with friends and you might miss your loved ones. Veterinarian If you love animals, then youll love being a veterinarian. We love our animals, be they dogs, cats or even wolves, our little friends need just as much care as a human does, and the only way to provide them with the right care is to put them in the capable hands of a veterinarian. Training to be one takes a considerable amount of time, but if you love animals and you want to see their owners beaming with joy on a regular basis, then its time to consider a career switch to become a veterinarian. Not only can you help the pets themselves, but youll also have a hand in teaching their owners how to become better owners. Teacher Teachers get a lot of complaints due to the way parents perceive the educational world. However, it takes a lot of dedication and a very thick skin to be a teacher. This is because being a teacher makes you subject to a lot of insults from children, many mean comments, and perhaps even some harassment. However, if youre able to discipline your students and set them on the right path, youll be surprised at how fulfilling this job feels because youre imparting knowledge into the next generation for them to lead better lives. We are always eager to hear from our readers. Please feel free to contact us if you have any questions or suggestions regarding CareerAlley content. Good luck in your search,Joey Google+

Resume Writing - How to Write a Clear and Comprehensive Resume

Resume Writing - How to Write a Clear and Comprehensive ResumeOne of the most significant impediments to success is actually procrastination. The key to successful job hunting is having an absolutely clear and concise resume that leaves no room for procrastination. When writing a resume, there are three parts of it: information, structure and presentation. It is therefore important to start with the information. The information in a resume has to be able to demonstrate the skills, skills which are required to do the job, and to show that you have the qualifications.A resume can be done using very complicated formulas that are commonly used by recruitment agencies. The methods that are commonly used to create these formulas are not necessarily the best methods. A recruiter who is looking for a specific skill is probably looking for a very specific skill. What you want to do is be focused on being specific about what you know. Remember that skills are very specific, they are not general and the skills that your resume should contain are those which are specific. For example, if you are applying for a position as a project manager, that means that you will have to use software that can monitor all of the people and processes that are involved in a project. If you have ever been a project manager, you know how detailed this requires of you.Even if you have some knowledge of computer coding, this knowledge is very specific and needs to be represented in your resume. By specializing in one area you can demonstrate to the recruiter that you have the required skills that they are looking for.Another common use of a special 'stack' of information is in the area of presentation. Your resume can be a summary of how your skills would enhance the current position that you are seeking. This is where procrastination comes in.The job hunter that is capable of presenting his or her experience in a clear and concise manner can most often be the one to get the job that they are see king. When the person that is filling out a resume is able to do this, they are probably a person that is highly qualified for the position that they are seeking. This is why it is important to write your resume in a very specific way. This is something that the recruiters should not be concerned with. They have their own checklist of skills and are looking for people that are looking for the same skills that they are. Knowing this, the job hunter can concentrate on the written form of their resume, which shows the recruiter that they have the knowledge that they need to fill out a perfect resume.
